This is Cookie, a lioness at the Los Angeles Zoo. I shot this photo in March 2012 and recently found out that Cookie died later that year at the age of 23. 23 is apparently a very good lifespan for lions, which typically don’t live much past their early teens in the wild.
I was surprised at how sad I was to hear that Cookie had passed. I quite like the photo I made of her and shooting it in some way created a small bond between us. For me, anyway. I’ve submitted this photo to the Biodiversity Portal of Singapore, possibly there’s a bit of immortality in it for her.
